Vukušić
About
Vukušić (pronounced: Voo-koo-shitsch) is a small family winery that has been producing wine for generations in Pojezerje (poe-yeh-zher-yeh) region. The location is a stunning valley inland in Dalmatia, where farming started in the family nearly 5 generations ago, when the Jezero (lake) was historically spilled for fields to be created.
Several rivers go through the vineyards, making it a beautiful landscape and the abundant water supply below the vineyards and all around them make the soil extremely fertile for any kind of farming, and the two mountains surrounding the vineyards create an interesting micro-climate.
The family has always focused on the local indigenous varietals, mostly the underappreciated but rising-star Dalmatian white, Zlatarica (pronounced: Zlah-TAR-reetz-ah), and the red being a local favorite, Plavka, (also known as Plavina), as well as Plavac Mali and several other international varietals.
All the work in the vineyards is done by Darko, and his wife Kata, which is all organic and done by-hand. Given their unique position, the abundance of fertile soil drove them to get more involved in farming and wanting to take over their grandfather’s land so it would not be forgotten. Along with the vineyards, many different crops can be found on their land, including many different types of figs, plums, apples, cherries as well as olive trees.
Their approach to winemaking has always been low-intervention and now after marrying into the family, Filip Bibich (Bibich Wines) has begun assisting in the cellar. Together, they take a wonderfully refreshing approach to Dalmatian wines, in showing pure and authentic wines, with tremendous drinkability. The wines are simple yet intriguing; precise, yet natural.
